The Megillah we read on Purim is an enigma. Laced with irony, it deigns that our holiday is to be named "Lots" -- Purim -- after the lots that Haman threw in his attempt to wipe out the Jews. But why name the holiday after the designs of our mortal enemy? And why name it for the very notion of chance and happenstance that our tradition seems to reject? |
